MR. BLAISDELL: More feedback today in reference to our recent
columns about Zippo founder George G. Blaisdell:
Lolita Colley Norris writes, “My father, Warren E. Colley of
Interstate Parkway, knew Mr. Blaisdell well. Mr. Blaisdell, or
‘George’ to him, would only call my dad when he needed any
electrical work done, and he passed his name to many of his
friends.”
“My dad was a master electrician at the time with Hull Electric.
Mr. Blaisdell recommended my dad not only for his expert work, but
the fact that he never left a mess in anyone’s home. He would seek
out the broom, dustpan, vacuum sweeper – whatever it took to do the
job right.
“He was a big friend of Mr. Blaisdell’s little poodle, named
‘Pete.’ ‘Pete’ always was right there ‘helping out.’
“As for Carroll Gould, their family lived right up the road from
us. We were good friends, especially with Jean and also Rene, and
loved his littlest one, Martha. Mrs. Gould was a very sweet lady,
too. We were always warmly welcomed there, and Jean and I used to
walk down to Berlin’s Dairy Bar in the summertime. We loved to get
a small group and square dance at their home every now and
then.
“I guess it is Jean who now lives in San Antonio, Texas. (Hi,
Jean!) I now live in Columbus, Ohio, but Bradford will always be my
hometown. We will be there for the Italian Festival this year and
can’t wait. We were in the class of 1954.”
GOOD EARS: Tim Hoh of Johnsonburg passes along a remarkable
reference to a Bradford resident from 1948.
Tim tells us he was listening to the Adventures of Superman on
an old-time radio show. The episode, titled “Batman’s Great
Mystery,” featured the voices of Bud Collyer as Superman/Clark
Kent; Matt Crowley as Batmanð and Ronald Liss as Robin.
The program originally aired on the Mutual Radio Network from
Feb. 3-17, 1948. And the Bradford name popped up as part of a
Superman Giveaway contest.
The Feb. 4, 1948, winner was Donald Campfort – or maybe Campbell
– ofðBradford, apparently the only person from Bradford (among many
others) to win this contest.
TODAY’S QUOTE: “If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, in
a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will
be,” said Thomas Jefferson.
