RTS for Tuesday

LATE SNACK: A hungry bruin has a late snack near Clermont at
dusk one day in late June.

Mary Margaret Sullivan of Eldred sent us that photo of the bear
as it was about to clean out a little birdfeeder at the Sullivans’
camp nearly Clermont. She writes, “The collar indicates he is
someone’s ‘nuisance’ bear!”

From our understanding, the Pennsylvania Game Commission uses a
collar to identify problem bears before moving them to a new
location. Our guess is this bear – which looks like a pretty big
animal – will be on the move again.

Nuisance bears are ones which hang around an area a bit too
much, helping themselves to whatever grub is available.

In any case, the picture garnered “oohs” and “aahs” in the
newsroom. We must admit, nuisance or not, that he or she is a very
cute bear.

LOCAL ANGLE: Barbara Stambaugh tells us, “Smethport was
mentioned on the front page of the Sentinel newspaper in Carlisle,
Pa., today. Lt. Col. Sergio Dickerson was welcomed as the new
garrison commander at the U.S. Army War College’s Carlisle
Barracks. In citing his connections to the state, Dickerson
mentioned that his father was born in Smethport.”

NATURE NOTE: OK, folks, get a load of this one. A woman who
lives on Dennis Lane tells us there was a critter on her porch the
other morning that sounds like … a crayfish? Her description
totally matches a photograph on the Web of a crayfish but the house
is nowhere near a stream – which is the only place we’ve ever seen
them. It was about four inches long and dark brown in color.

Anybody have a possible explanation? Inquiring minds want to
know.

KIND ACT: Remember those “random acts of kindness”? A reader
suggested a good one: When you see those highway construction
workers toiling in the extreme heat we’ve had, how about passing
along a nice cold drink to one of them?

TODAY’S QUOTE: “An event becomes news only when journalists and
editors decide to record it,” said David Nasaw, author, 2000.

As always, today’s quote is from the Freedom Forum, an
organization dedicated to free press, free speech, free spirit.
