WELCOME: A big Bradford welcome to the Zippo and Case collectors
who’ve gathered together today for the 2006 International Swap
Meet!
The Swap also runs Friday and Saturday and the town will be
teeming with activity. Summerfest runs the three days of the swap
and will include a fine arts show; car, truck and motorcycle show;
craft and food vendors; bed races, a parade; and a motorcycle dice
run – and more.
Details of all the events can be found in our special Swap
edition inside today’s edition.
One highlight will be the Zippo/Case fireworks display at 9 p.m.
Friday that promises to be bigger and better than ever.
AND ALSO: This always seems to be the biggest weekend of the
year not just for Bradford but around the region. Plenty to do for
everyone – Enjoy! Inside today edition you’ll also find Out &
About, a joint publication of The Era and sister newspapers the
Olean (N.Y.) Times Herald, and the Salamanca (N.Y.) Press, which
gives all the details of events throughout the Twin Tiers.
100 YEARS AGO: Our thanks to Bradford Landmark Society for
passing along these headlines from the year 1906 in Bradford:
June 6 -The new convent being erected between St. Bernard Church
and the pastor’s residence is rapidly approaching completion. The
roof will soon be closed.
Oct. 8 -The new maternity building for the Bradford Hospital is
rapidly nearing completion.
Oct. 9 -The Case Cutlery works on Bank Street now employs 100
hands.
Oct. 23 – The laying of new rails on Congress Street was
interrupted by a strike of 30 Italians who had been paid $1.75 for
10 hours and now asked for $1.75 for nine hours.”
YOUR INPUT: Gail Moyer of Bradford passes along important
information for National Fuel Gas customers unhappy with the
increase and surcharge being proposed by the utility.
Contact the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission at
1-800-782-1110 to voice your opinion. Gail tells us it’s as simple
as selecting option 3 to file a complaint. “It only takes a few
minutes of your time and the more customers that call the more
likely it will not get passed.”
TODAY’S QUOTE: “We have raised successive generations of
Americans who are accustomed to getting their information from
television, where there is none.” So said syndicated columnist
Donald Kaul in 2005, according to our Freedom Forum calendar.
