MORE HOOPIE: A little clarification on the exact definition of
“hoopie”:
Former resident Gary Barr writes, “A hoopie wasn’t necessarily a
stripped down Model T. Any car or truck that wasn’t worth putting
on the road would do. Grampa Mealy and Tink and Glade used to keep
us in wheels to ride the lease roads at Lafferty hollow for years.
We had some great times riding the roads.”
HOT TIME: One of our Florida fans has a comment about Bradford
weather that, given our recent hot spell, seems a little
ironic.
Mary Fairbanks writes, “I hope your weather up there is warm and
toasty.ð I know it will be 97 here this weekend so in the air
conditioning I hope to stay.ð That or at the beach. Oh, for those
cool Bradford evenings…
But, at least there are no hurricanes so far this year like in
years past. I’m sure they will be on their way, though.”
On another subject, a time capsule placed in Old City Hall, she
writes, “Oh, and speaking of time capsules, don’t forget there is
one at the UPB library that was buried when it was dedicated.ðI
know that I have a poem in it about graduation from thereðand the
year was 1988.ðI think it was a 25 year one.”
IN THE NEWS: The Bradford Era was “in the news” on July 9, in a
report on Sen. Rick Santorum’s recent visit to the region.
The Sunday Patriot-News of Harrisburg included a quote from our
story on Santorum who was visited just after North Korea president
Kim Jong II had test-fired several missiles.
“Kim doesn’t want to die. He wants to watch NBA basketball,”
Santorum had said, saying he feared Iran more than North Korea.
ZIPPO NOTES: Gearing up for this week’s Zippo/Case swap, we pass
along a “Zippo sighting” from Karen Snyder of Port Allegany who
caught the reference in the Sunday comics.
In “Get Fuzzy,” which is in the Buffalo News, one of the
characters shows his son a wrapped birthday gift. The son says,
“That looks like a gun, Dad.”
Dad replies, “No, no, it’s a swanky Zippo fireplace
lighter.”
Son says, “you can’t give him a lighter!”
“That’s what he asked for!”
If memory serves us right there is some connection between this
comic strip and Bradford. If we remember it, we’ll pass it
along.
