TIME CAPSULE: Joan Klussmann has a question for readers: “A time
capsule was placed into the vault of the old City Hall sometime
during the early 1980s. (I believe Max Moore was mayor at the
time.)”
“On a rainy day, a brief ceremony was held inside the decaying
building with a few gentlemen from the community and my small class
of 6th grade students and myself in attendance.
“The children were allowed to sign their names on a paper which
was included in the capsule. Was the capsule found during
renovations to the building? If so, is it still part of City Hall?
If not, where is it?”
BANK NOTE: Muriel Young Okerlund of Gifford writes, “In reply to
your inquiry regarding the Bradford National Bank … The year was
1962. I had just graduated from Olean Business Institute and was
hired by Lewis Hullihen, city treasurer.”
“My job was to type the daily deposit from monies collected from
county, city and school taxes. Also, utility bills were paid at the
treasurer’s office. The city’s general fund was located at the
Bradford National Bank at 71 Main St.
“Mr. Hullihen would call for a police escort and take his
briefcase filled with checks and cash to deposit. I remember on two
occasions when he was out of the office, and I was asked to go to
the bank. I remember the police escort being Lt. Gerald Beyler.
Will never forget that awesome responsibility I felt as a
20-year-old gal carrying all that money into the Bradford National
Bank.”
BEER HERE: Gus Gocella drops us a line after a visit to Coors
Brewery in Golden, Colo., and we’re never one to turn down trivia
about one of our favorite beverages.
Gus writes, “Tidbits of information: Adolf Coors was really
spelled ‘Kors’ when he immigrated to this country … legally.
“Also Coors was the first brewery to introduce beer in cans and
the year I will keep secret until I return for a trivia question
later.
“The brewery uses it waste to make pet food, especially cat
food. No wonder cats act strangely after eating! Coors is also into
making ethanol for both the brewing industry as well as an additive
for gasoline.”
Other material for RTS pushed back Gus’ report and he’s probably
home by now. Maybe we can get the answer to that trivia
question!
