Kane man dies in tractor accident Sunday night

KANE – A Kane man found trapped under a farm tractor off a
forestry route near Ludlow Sunday night died as a result of
injuries sustained in the incident.

Martin Niklas, 40, of Wetmore Road was killed when the tractor
he was operating ran over him after he was ejected from the
tractor, according to the Kane-based state police.

Rescue crews were dispatched to Forestry Route 133 about three
miles west of Jo-Jo Road at about 9:10 p.m. Reports indicate the
tractor crash actually happened at about 7:45 p.m.

Police said the 1947 Farmall tractor operated by Niklas was
westbound on the forest route when it left the road for unknown
reasons and entered a wooded area, ejecting Niklas, who was
subsequently run over by the tractor.

Niklas was not using a restraint system, police said.

The investigation continues.

At about 9:45 p.m., the Kane Volunteer Fire Department fire
police were dispatched to Nivers Road coming out of Ludlow to close
the road and manage traffic due to the crash.

The Ludlow Volunteer Fire Department assisted at the scene.

An obituary for Niklas appears on page 2 of today’s Era.
