LEFTY CAUVEL: “”Larry or Lefty Cauvel was a hero to us younger
guys in our little community on Fullerton Road near the Stateline
on top of Bradford hill on the way to Knapps Creek, N.Y.,”” writes
Corky Galloway.[neWLine]
Corky writes in response to a recent column we carried on the
60th anniversary of Lawrence Cauvel pitching a
shutout.[neWLine]
Corky continues, “”His family were great neighbors and a good
influence on the youth in our oil lease, ridge-running community.
It was there on a skinned-earth diamond in the middle of the woods
that most of the kids learned the game of baseball.[neWLine]
“”It seemed like during the summers, every one of the youth,
young and old, would spend every spare moment with glove, bat and
ball. We all pulled for Larry and his foray into organized
ball.[neWLine]
“”In 2002, when I returned to PA to attend my 50th HS
anniversary at Otto, one of the first to approach me, after over 40
years, was Larry Cauvel, saying ‘Do you remember me?'[neWLine]
“”One glance and the response was, ‘How you doing,
Lefty?'[neWLine]
“”Many memories came back to me, of Mrs. Lawrence Cauvel,
Larry’s mother, giving us kids bread and jelly for snacks before we
headed to the ballfield where we knocked it around and usually ate
a few apples off the trees that fringed the third base
line.[neWLine]
“”Later at oil company or inter-community games, it was Mrs.
Cauvel who sold pop from an ice water -filled washtub to the fans.
I seem to recall that a lot of the pop was Shasta
brand.[neWLine]
“”Larry lives in the old house on Fullerton Road and when last I
saw him looked fit and ready to toe the rubber again. The smile was
the same and he was straight and lean. Thanks for mentioning him.
Many of us have memories of many other games that Larry pitched. He
was a winner at the Game and a winner at
Life.””[neWLine][neWLine]
TODAY’S QUOTE: “”Whatever his gripe and motivation, ‘Deep
Throat’ Mark Felt ended up a secret patriot. And Woodward and
Bernstein did what reporters are supposed to do: Check out the
emperor’s clothes.”” So said Richard Reeves, journalist, author, in
2005. As always, our thanks to the Freedom Forum for today’s
notable quote.
