TEEN TIME: We heard from George Caylor, former School Street
Junior High School English teacher, in connection with our recent
columns on WESB’s “Teen Time” program.
Bill Higie had mentioned George, his former ninth-grade English
teacher, in a previous column, noting that both he and Mrs.
Johnston had helped students prepare copy about School Street
Junior High School activities, which they then read on the air.
George Caylor writes: “Mr. Fred Pysher called me to say my
former student Bill Higie had some pleasant memories of my teaching
days in Bradford.”
“My three years in Bradford and at School Street Junior High
were three of the best years imaginable.
“Teaching great kids, playing gigs with Fred Pysher and Grant
Orris, boating on the Kinzua and hunting deer at Westline are all
great memories I wouldn’t trade for anything,” he writes.
“In the past 40 years, my need for new experiences has taken me
around the world, but Bradford was a truly unique era of a happy
life.”
Also on the subject of WESB’s teen radio shows, Sally Kinnamon
offers this: “In response to Terry Williams, it is possible that
the emcee of that show was Dave Sill, class of ’54. It was a weekly
show featuring high school students, i.e. those involved in class
plays, special events, etc. Can’t remember the name of the show,
only that it was weekly and in the late afternoon.”
CITY SONG: A former Bradford resident also wrote to us, this
time about our column featuring the 1883 poem saluting the old
hometown:
“Being away for over 10 years now, living here in New Mexico, I
truly have enjoyed the Bradford City song,” Judy Schmader
writes.
“When back for a visit, I find the changes are endless to the
little town, and, yes, it is a safe haven for raising children as
both my daughters were born and raised there,” Judy writes.
