JUNE 5, 1946: It was 60 years ago this month that Lawrence
Cauvel of Bradford pitched a shutout on his first
start.[neWLine]
The Bradford Era dated June 5, 1946, has this to
say:[neWLine]
“”Lawrence Cauvel, the little southpaw from suburban Bradford,
was handed his first starting assignment in organized ball last
night at Community Park and came through the experience without a
scratch as the Blue Wings routed Hamilton in 12-0 fashion to sweep
the three-game series.[neWLine]
“”While his mates were rattling base hits all over the place,
Cauvel scattered eight Cardinal blows and pitched himself out of a
couple of rough spots to earn a shutout.[neWLine]
“”The Wings batted around in two big innings when they pushed
across five runs in the second and four in the fifth. Tony
Caliendo, Bradford second baseman, headed the barrage with four for
six and four RBIs while Al Taffy, Stan Coveleskie and Mike
Genevrino had three apiece.””[neWLine]
The Era’s coverage also included details of an incident which
shows that antics in 2006 sports are nothing new to the
game:[neWLine]
“”Vern Schmidt, Hamilton short stop, was injured in the seventh
inning in a play at the plate that almost developed into a fight
between players of the two clubs.[neWLine]
“”Schmidt was on second and Roderman on first when Joe Weber hit
a ground ball at Vicknair. The Bradford third baseman tried for the
force at second and fired the ball into right field. Schmidt was
waved home on the play.[neWLine]
“”Stan Coveleskie recovered the ball and threw to the plate.
Perry was three feet up the line waiting for the ball when Schmidt
roared into him going at full speed. The Hamilton player sailed up
and over both Perry and home plate. While Schmidt was still on the
ground, Perry quickly tagged him out.[neWLine]
“”Schmidt never moved as players of both teams crowded around
him and a doctor came out of the stands to attend him. Johnny
Newman, Hamilton manager, stated later that the injury was
described as a torn cartilage in his right knee, and he probably
will be out of the lineup for at least a month.[neWLine]
“”While Schmidt was still on the ground, Pitcher Lineman of the
Hamilton team challenged Perry. The Bradford catcher tossed off his
mask but other players blocked their path before any blows could be
struck.””
