‘Round the Square for Saturday, June 17, 2006

TODAY’S QUOTE: “”When I was a boy of 14, my father was so
ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when
I got to be 21, I was astonished at how much the old man had
learned in seven years,”” said Mark Twain. Our sentiment exactly as
we ponder Father’s Day tomorrow.[neWLine]

GO, PITT!: If you’ve got an old college pennant in the attic,
and you don’t even think you could peddle it in a garage sale, we
have a suggestion for you.[neWLine]

Michelle Bowen, a middle school educator in a rural community in
Michie, Tenn., would put it to good use.[neWLine]

“”Many of our students are disadvantaged and see no future
beyond high school. Our goal is to encourage the students to look
past high school and into college,”” she writes.[neWLine]

“”The idea is to immerse the students in an environment filled
with pennants from the different colleges and universities from
around the nation and to encourage the students to look outside
McNairy County, Tenn., to see other possibilities for their
lives.[neWLine]

“”Many students only know of the few major colleges and
universities that are in our surrounding area and we would like to
broaden their horizons seeing a better future through a college
education.[neWLine]

“”The idea is to hang a banner entitled ‘Where Are You Going To
College?’ and follow the banner with college pennants.[neWLine]

“”To accomplish this, I need the help of individuals who are
looking for a good home for their old college or university
pennants that are stored in closets, attics, or boxes in
garages.[neWLine]

“”We will gratefully accept any and all pennants to hang in our
classrooms, hallways, and the cafeteria. I would like to thank
everyone in advance for his or her help in changing the future of
our youth.””[neWLine]

You can send them to Mrs. Bowen at Michie Elementary School;
6418 Highway 57 East; Michie, Tenn. 38357.[neWLine]

TEEN TIME: Sue Wilt of Bradford writes, “”In response to Round
the Square for the program about teens on the radio, it was called
Teentime. I remember giving the school news on there. It started at
7 p.m. and went, I believe, for 15 minutes. I did it through the
speech class at BHS. Mr. Olson then was my teacher. It was a great
experience. As for the DJ, it was Gary Lederman (not sure of the
spelling) at the time.””
