Round the Square for June 8

MORE MAYPOLE: Ron and Peggy (Everly) Paterson write, “”We were
interested in the Maypole reports in Round the Square. Such events
were quite common when we attended Bradford area elementary schools
in the late ’40s and early ’50s.””[neWLine]

Ron attended 5th Ward School and Maypole activities were held at
the City Park at the south end of Rochester Street, about a block
from the school. Peggy attended Derrick City School and Maypole
activities were held on the front lawn of that
facility.[neWLine]

“”Those were the days!”” they write. “”We now are retired and
live in Rehoboth Beach, Del.””[neWLine][neWLine]

IN THE NEWS: It’s been a little while now, but the December 2005
edition of AAA World carried a photo of what they call “”beauty in
the middle of nowhere”” – a scene from Potter County.[neWLine]

Pictured are small cabins for rent in Galeton, in the eastern
part of Potter County. It was used as an example of an attractive
and unusual photo of the fall foliage.[neWLine]

The photographer was headed home to Philadelphia after visiting
friends in Michigan when the scene caught his eye.[neWLine]

“”The combination of the colors and the rustic old ’50s-style
cabins that you just don’t see much of these days … It’s just one
of those shots that comes out of nowhere when you’re out in the
middle of nowhere.””[neWLine]

The tiny cabins – only one room, perhaps – sit close to what
we’d guess is Pine Run. For the life of us, though, we cannot
remember the name of the motel. Could it be the Ox
Yoke?[neWLine][neWLine]

THAT SITE: Our Memorial Day edition included a story about
Jolene Devaney, a former Bradford woman, who met a man who knew her
uncle during World War II.[neWLine]

In her research to find more information about her uncle,
Patrick Michaels, Jolene stumbled upon a Web site for the 517th
Parachute Regimental Combat Team.[neWLine]

The Web site – www.517prct.org – includes information on
reunions, soldier stories and a history of the group.[neWLine]

Those looking for information will find this Web site
helpful.[neWLine][neWLine]

MORE WESB: Another inquiry about WESB. Terry Williams writes,
“”Does anybody remember a WESB radio program that featured teens
from Bradford High, one being the son of a WESB radio personality?
I can’t remember the name of the show or my classmate who had a
great radio voice like his father.””
