Round the Square for June 5

LET IT SNOW: While complaining about the sweltering heat of
recent days, consider this:[neWLine]

Jim Flynn writes, “”Our parents moved to Bradford in April 1939.
On Memorial Day, 30 May, they decided to drive to Lantz Corners and
have dinner at Breezy Heights, a restaurant that has long since
burned to the ground.””[neWLine]

“”As they were approaching the restaurant, it started to snow!
They wondered to what kind of place had they moved.””[neWLine]

MORE MAYPOLE: We heard from Marty (Everly) Monroe of Middletown,
Va., on another RTS subject: “”The letter about West Branch School
and the Maypole Dance brought back many memories for me. My best
friend, Lynn Bridge McMillan, and I were just talking about the
dance not too long ago as we mourned the loss of a great piece of
our childhood.””[neWLine]

“”The pole itself was white and the ribbons were pastel colors.
The dance was indeed done in opposite directions with the dancers
weaving over and under each other. The end result was a braided
effect down the entire pole.[neWLine]

“”I read the Era online and especially RTS to print it out for
my children who are now young adults. We moved away when they were
in grade school to live in Winchester, Va.””[neWLine]

ON PATROL: Bob Byerly comments on an RTS we had in April about
area patrols going to Detroit instead of making the usual trip to
Washington, D.C.[neWLine]

“”It was either ’44 or ’45,”” he said. “”I was one of the boys
that went. There were two of us from Lincoln School”” – he and
Darryl Huntington.[neWLine]

“”We left here on a Saturday, went to Buffalo and took the boat
from Buffalo,”” Bob remembers. “”I think we left at about 6 p.m.
because it was a night trip all the way to Detroit.””[neWLine]

Bob said they went to the Detroit Zoo and then went to Ford,
where they saw a “”bunch of old cars.””[neWLine]

“”It was fantastic. I remember at night us kids just had a ball
… never slept. It was quite a few years ago.””[neWLine]

TODAY’S QUOTE: “”The doctors told me this morning my blood
pressure is down so low that I can start reading the newspapers and
watching the TV news,”” said our 40th president, Ronald Reagan, in
1987.
