Lady Hubbers look for revenge at PIAA playoffs

ST. MARYS The Smethport Lady Hubbers won a pitchers dual against
Brockway 1-0 in the District 9 softball playoffs consolation game
on Friday, taking third place.

On the hill for the Lady Hubbers were Emma Hahn and Diana
Phalon. The duo combined to fire a four-hitter and retire 14
batters.

Lauren Kinniburgh homered as the leadoff batter in the second
inning, scoring Smethports loan run.

She cranked the first pitch she saw, enthused Smethport coach
Christine Lightner.

Kinniburgh also cracked a single in the fourth inning, finishing
2-for-2 and completing the Lady Hubbers offense.

C. Lyle was on the mound for Brockway, allowing two hits,
walking one and fanning 11.

For Brockway, Lindemuth singled twice and B. Kuhar and B. Liddle
each singled.

Both teams played flawlessly, Lightner admitted. There were no
errors. I commend both teams. It was a great district playoff game,
and Im just thankful we have powerful bats on our team.

Im pretty excited that we get to advance and play once again in
the PIAA playoffs, Lightner said. If we hadnt won today, wed be
done.

The Lady Hubbers (19-2) travel to McKees Rocks on Monday to face
District 7 champion Chartiers-Houston.

Coincidentally, Chartiers-Houston was the team to knock
Smethport out of the PIAA playoffs last year with a controversial
2-1 win.

It came down to a bad call in the bottom of the seventh,
recalled Lighter. It was a timing play at the plate that didnt
count what would have been a tying run for us.

Mondays game begins at 2 p.m. at Fairhaven Park.

Its revenge time, Lightner promised. They are going to be the
team to go home this year.
