THE WALL: A sentiment with which we certainly concur comes from
Lou “”Corky”” Galloway of Tucson, Ariz.:[neWLine]
“”Even though I never served in Vietnam, as a veteran and a
friend or relative of many who did serve during those long years of
national agony and confusion, my visits to the VVMMW and to the
Wall in Washington were so very therapeutic for me.[neWLine]
“”I hope all citizens, young and old, veteran or not get the
opportunity to experience The Wall.[neWLine]
“”Some of the best cries and most liberating moments of my life
have been while visiting that great shrine to American suffering
and sacrifice. It honors so very many of our finest.[neWLine]
“”Congratulations to Smethport and McKean County for hosting the
VVMMW.””[neWLine]
We agree. It would take a hard-hearted person not to be moved by
this simple, solid tribute to those killed in Vietnam.[neWLine]

SUMMER SIGN: A confidante on Big Shanty tells us that the
fireflies are already strutting their stuff.[neWLine]
At least a couple dozen fireflies were flashing in the fields on
Tuesday night – “”a mite bit early.””[neWLine]

MAYPOLE: A recent item in “”Years Ago”” about the annual Maypole
Dance at West Brach School some 40 years ago jogged the memory of
Mike Crawford of Bradford.[neWLine]
He writes, “”Being 49 got me to thinking I may have been one of
the ones you referred to in that section. But the one thing I
really started to wonder is are their any schools that still do
that tradition?””[neWLine]
“”I work in Port Allegany and got to talking about the Maypole
Dance and none of the others in my age group did not remember doing
this in any of the other schools in McKean County.[neWLine]
“”If I remember correctly there were 24 dancers that each had a
ribbon of colored cloth (red, white and blue). Twelve rotated and
weaved clockwise and the other twelve went the
opposite.[neWLine]
“”Is the pole still in the School District or did it meet the
same demise as West Branch?””[neWLine]

TREE FACE: Andy Brodis of Bradford comments on that “”wooden
face”” we ran on page 1 the other day: “”One doesn’t have to travel
to Arkansas to see this. The hillside trail behind Sprague’s Maple
Farm and Restaurant (Portville, NY) is full of them. When I saw the
picture, that’s what I thought I would be reading about – not Fort
Smith.””
