THAT CLOCK: The clock featured on the cover of the Summer in the
Alleghenies (inside today’s edition) should be familiar to
Bradfordians. Its atop Old City Hall. We had neglected to mention
that “little” detail in our cover credits.
TV TIME: Specialist Chad Skaggs, stationed at Fort Bragg, N.C.,
was part of a two-part segment on Tuesday’s CBS Evening News titled
“Special Forces, Making the Cut.”
Specialist Skaggs was shown during a mock hand-to-hand combat
exercise during Robin Sage, one of the final trainings for Special
Forces.
More than 3,600 apply to Special Forces training. This year 750
will be turned out as Special Forces soldiers.
Skaggs is a 2003 graduate of Bradford High, and the son of
Harold and Linda Skaggs of Bradford.
LOOK UP: Ed Davis of Limestone, N.Y., tells us he saw an
American bald eagle off Parkside Drive behind him house last week.
Just in time for Memorial Day!
GROUNDHOGS: Era photographer Francie Long got some nice
compliments on the front-page photo Tuesday of a mom groundhog and
three babies.
Marlene Eaton even dropped a line: “I have enjoyed seeing the
animal pictures thatðyou put on the front page of the
newspaper.ðAnimals remember and have feelings just as we do. Many
of theðgenes found in animals are also found in humans.ðSome people
have a hard time getting along with animals.”
BAIN’S BAR: Bain’s Bar apparently was something of a speakeasy
some 30-odd years ago. The current owners of the residence doing
some spring cleaning found a sign, “Bain’s Bar” which at one time
adorned the place.
E-mail details: JJ of Jamestown, N.Y., writes, “The gentleman’s
name associated with the Bain’s Bar sign in Marshburg would be the
person named Matt Bain. Frequent resident around the Bradford area.
Haven’t thought of him and the character within him since the 1970
decade.”
Frank Milks writes, “That was Matt Bain’s Bar. I remember it,
but don’t remember much about it. Matt used to work for the State
DOT.”
Ronald Mascioni of Bradford confirms the name as “Bain’s,” not
“Baim’s.”
On another RTS subject, he had an answer for the gentleman in
East Bradford who wondered why he had no hummingbirds visiting his
feeders. Ronald opined, “It might be possible the reason the
humming birds did not come to east Bradford was the stink fest.
They have a good sense of smell.”
