City cleanup month coming to an end

Friday is the unofficial end to the City of Bradford’s cleanup
month, said Councilman Bob Onuffer on Wednesday.

And now he’s asking city residents to beautify Bradford this
weekend for Memorial Day on Monday.

“This weekend will be the grass-cutting blitz,” said Onuffer,
who heads the city’s Department of Public Works.

“We can all do something … for the servicemen and women. Why
don’t we clean this town up in honor of these men and women?” he
suggested. “They’re (in Iraq) because they want to serve our
country … so we can have a nice community to live in.

“Let’s try to make it look nice,” he said.

Onuffer asked that people make an effort to mow their grass,
wash their windows, plant some flowers, or do something else to
spruce up the city a bit before Monday’s Memorial Day services.

“I wouldn’t ask somebody to do something I wouldn’t do,” he
said. “Try if you can to help out your neighbors. Cut their grass
for them. Take hold of your street. Make it look nice.”

Onuffer said cooperation for cleanup month was quite good, and
he has seen positive results through the city.

“I’ve seen a few changes as I’ve went around town,” he said,
explaining that he walks around Bradford daily.

And people have stopped him to make positive comments about the
month-long effort to beautify the city, saying it was far easier to
work at cleaning up at their own pace and have a longer time period
to dispose of refuse.

But Onuffer said the credit for the idea of the month-long
effort should go to City Clerk John Peterson, who is the one who
came up with the idea.

“We’re looking at it again for next year,” Onuffer said.

He explained there was no additional overtime and no additional
trucks used during the cleanup, which helped control expenses for
the city.

“The only thing additional was the tonnage,” Onuffer said.

While the cleanup month is soon to be completed, the city DPW
will haul away most items that are left at the curb throughout the
year, he added.

“They always pick up what you put out there,” he said. “They do
a job above and beyond.”
