BAIM’S BAR: Maybe our readers can fill in the blanks on this
one.[neWLine]
Darrell Meyers of Allegheny Forest Ministries tells us that a
Boy Scout troop from DuBois had been helping out at the Kinzua
Retreat House in Marshburg recently when they came upon a relic of
sorts.[neWLine]
While the boys were picking up litter and branches, they
discovered an old sign, from about the 1960s.[neWLine]
“”We knew the house was previously a restaurant and bar, and a
neighbor told us the name was ‘Baim’s Bar,'”” Darrell tells
us.[neWLine]
“”Imaging our surprise when we found this sign,”” he said,
attaching this photo to his e-mail.[neWLine]

“”Considering its age, it is well preserved. I remember that
many of the original ANF signs were like this, heavy timber wood
material, with the name routered into the wood.””[neWLine]
The sign does, indeed, resemble the ANF signs but our reading of
it indicates it was “”Bain’s Bar.””[neWLine]
“”We will keep this sign as a part of the history and heritage
of this house in Marshburg,”” he added.[neWLine]
Given Marshburg’s interesting history from the 1960s when Kinzua
Dam was built, we thought this sign might stir up some interesting
old memories. We believe the retreat house is on Eschrich Road off
Route 59 not far from the junction with Route 770.[neWLine]

NO-SHOWS?: Howard Johnson of 353 East Main St. is puzzled by the
solitude at his hummingbird feeder. Where have all the hummers
gone? Are they, perhaps, boycotting the East End?[neWLine]
“”I have a feeder, a hanging basket with pink and red and purple
flowers beside the feeder, and not the first sign of them,”” he
said. “”How much would it cost to put in an ad asking for one to
come this way?””[neWLine]
We have had plenty of calls this season from people who have
hummingbirds at their feeders, so we know they have returned.
Anyone have an explanation for Howard?[neWLine]
