TODAY’S POEM: “”Why am I so weak and weary,[neWLine]
See how faint my heated breath,[neWLine]
All around to me seems darkness,[neWLine]
Tell me, comrades, is this death?[neWLine]
Ah, how will I know your answer,[neWLine]
To my fate I meekly bow[neWLine]
If you’ll only tell me truly[neWLine]
Who will care for Mother now?[neWLine]
Soon with angels I’ll be marching.[neWLine]
With bright laurels on my brow.[neWLine]
I have for my country fallen.[neWLine]
Who will care for Mother now?[neWLine]
Who will comfort her in sorrow?[neWLine]
Who will dry the falling tear?[neWLine]
Gently smooth her wrinkled forehead?[neWLine]
Who will whisper words of cheer?[neWLine]
Even now I think I see her[neWLine]
Kneeling, praying for me! How[neWLine]
Can I leave her in her anguish?[neWLine]
Who will care for Mother now?[neWLine]
Let this knapsack be my pillow[neWLine]
And my mantle be the sky;[neWLine]
Hasten comrades to the battle,[neWLine]
I will like a soldier die.[neWLine]
Soon with angels I’ll be marching[neWLine]
With bright laurels on my brow.[neWLine]
I have for my country fallen,[neWLine]
Who will care for Mother now?””[neWLine]

Betty Fralich of Bradford provided us the poem which seems
appropriate for the day before Mother’s Day. In turn, she received
it from her grandson John who had read it in his West Virginia
school. The author of this untitled Civil War lament is not
known.[neWLine]

WESB: Bill Branch of Williamsburg, Va., adds to our list of WESB
alumni: “”Regarding the Round the Square columns on folks who we
used to hear on the local radio station – in addition to Charlie
Callahan who has been already mentioned, I remember Lou Adler, now
on national radio and can be heard now and again, and Dave
Sill.[neWLine]
We also heard from Jim Belardia of Bradford on that subject and
on the Emery Hotel and its broadcasts: “”My aunt, Christine Camera,
was a waitress at the Emery Coffee Shop at that time they had the
broadcast. The announcers were Bob Norman and Bill Peters, and this
was around 1948 or a few years later.””[neWLine]
“”She doesn’t know who the sponsors were, but it was really
nice, and the customers really enjoyed it.””[neWLine]

LATE NOTE: Oops, our fault. We have another hummingbird report
earlier this week and only now remembered to get it in. Shersti
Fledderman sent along an e-mail last Sunday: “”… saw hummingbirds
at my feeders today, 5/7/06 in Kersey, Pa. Good sign of summer on
the way.””
