MARJORIE WEST: “”A happy Mother’s Day picnic
turned into a day of tragedy and mystery on May 8, 1938. Four year
old Marjorie West went missing, and almost 70 years later, she has
never been found.””
[neWLine]
That famous disappearance is being used as a cornerstones of a
new effort to find missing persons.[neWLine]
That’s what we hear from the Doe Network, an
international volunteer organization devoted to assisting Law
Enforcement in solving cold cases involving Missing Persons and
Unidentified Victims.
[neWLine]
The group wrote to ask our help – your help – in sharing
Marjorie’s story. “”It is our hope this could provide information
that could solve this mystery.””[neWLine]
They call her story, “”Just what happened to Little
Marjorie?””[neWLine]
Many readers of RTS are familiar with this tale but we’ll pass
along the group’s description of what happened on May 8,
1938:[neWLine]
“”Her family decided to have a picnic after church that
beautiful Sunday afternoon, and stopped 40 miles outside Bradford,
in the White Gravel area of Pennsylvania. Marjorie, a pretty girl,
with bouncing red curls, was playing and picking flowers, with her
sister Dorthea. Around 3 p.m. her older sister went to talk to
their Mom; when she went to play with Marjorie, but she had
vanished![neWLine]
“”An extensive search of the area yielded no clues. More
investigation found a witness claiming to have seen little Marjorie
in a dark sedan around 11:30 p.m., traveling with a man searching
for a hotel in Thomas, W.Va. There was also speculation she fell
down a well, or was taken by a family member to Canada; no one
knows for sure, and her family is still waiting for
answers.””[neWLine]
The Doe Network tells us this: “”About 108,000 missing
adults and children are listed on the FBI’s NCIC database. The Doe
Network features Marjorie West, and thousands of other missing and
unidentified persons from all over the world.””
[neWLine]
“”Since its inception, the Doe Network has been instrumental in
solving 35 cases, several within Pennsylvania. Please, help
Marjorie become solve number 36, and talk about her disappearance
on or around May 8!””[neWLine]
Certainly anyone alive at the time of Marjorie’s disappearance
remembers the crush of news coverage at the time. Scores of
volunteers and police combed the area but were never able to locate
Marjorie.
