May is citywide clean up month

Be proud of your city and help your neighbors make it a brighter
place to live, says Bradford City Councilman Bob Onuffer on
Tuesday.

Onuffer, the councilman in charge of the Department of Public
Works, explained to The Era that May has been named as cleanup
month to give city residents a chance to do just that.

“I’d like to see us getting all the residents involved,” he
said. “I believe more pride can be instilled by doing it yourself.
By helping your neighbors.”

All month long, residents are being asked to clean up homes and
yards and dispose of unwanted or unused items. A list of eligible
items was printed in an ad in Saturday’s Era, and is also available
at City Hall.

“If anyone has questions, they can call city hall and ask
directions,” Onuffer said.

The clean up will be done in conjunction with regularly
scheduled refuse pickup days and will include items such as
household furnishings, sinks, toilets, tubs, carpeting and scrap
lumber of certain sizes if bundled and tied, and plastic and metal
toys.

There are special circumstances for disposing of yard waste and
white goods, and more information can be obtained by calling the
Department of Public Works office at City Hall.

Items being disposed of should be placed curbside. Onuffer asks
that residents remember that the cleanup will last all month, and
can put out some materials each time the DPW workers are scheduled
to come.

“When you do put out your stuff, put it out in an orderly
fashion,” he added. “Really, throughout the year when you find
something you don’t need, put it out to the curb.

“We’re just having a special emphasis this month,” he said.

And that special emphasis can include more than just disposing
of unwanted items.

“Cleanup to me involves trimming your yard, sealing your
driveway, painting your trim, trimming your shrubs,” Onuffer said.
“There are so many things we can do to make our city more
attractive.

“Let’s start it now,” he said. He pointed out that improvement
projects are slated for the city including Impact Bradford and Main
Street Streetscape. But why wait? Start cleaning up the city now,
he said.

“Let’s take pride in our city,” Onuffer added.

Part of that community pride extends into people’s own homes –
and into their doghouses.

“As part of cleanup, remind people when they walk their dogs,
take a bag or have a scooper with them,” he said, urging residents
to take care of their animal’s waste. “It would be a great benefit
in our quest to beautify Bradford.”
