ERIE – Erin Hannon captured the Most Valuable Field and Most
Valuable All-Around awards leading Bradford High to the team title
at the Erie McDowell Invitational on Saturday.
Hannon won the 100 hurdles (15.06), high jump (5’5″), long jump
(17’7 1/2″) and triple jump (37’7″) as the Lady Owls tallied 84
first-place points. General McLane was second with 82.
Sarah Lonzi won the 3200 (11:19.2) and set a school record in
the 1600 (5:16.5) with a second-place finish. Lonzi held the old
record of 5:17.2 set earlier this season.
Chloe Nickel was second in the 300 hurdles (47.30, personal
best). Katie White was seventh in the 800 (2:28.8, personal best),
Lindsay Sherman eighth in the 200 (27.82) and Tricia Copeland
eighth in the 100 (13.46).
The 400 relay team of Nickel, Dana Carrico, Copeland and Sherman
was second (51.78) and the 1600 relay team of Nickel, Copeland,
White and Sherman was third (4:12). Rachel Garges had a personal
best 8′ pole vault.
“We felt we would have a chance to win but we were not pointing
toward it,” BAHS coach Larry Stillman said. “We told the girls to
do their best and have fun. They really had a good day.
“We had many strong performances. It came down to the last event
– the 1600 relay. The coaching staff is very happy for the girls.
This is a top invitational.”
Stillman was pleased with the many great efforts.
“Erin is coming back from being sick,” Stillman said. “She
really had to work. Her 100 hurdle time was the second best ever.
She had a good day in the high jump as well.
“Our five sophomores all had great days. Chloe had a personal
best in the 300 hurdles and had an oustanding split in the 1600
relay.
“Kate White had a personal best 800 and won her heat. Tricia and
Lindsay continue to sprint well. They were up against tough
competition but came through with medals.
“Sarah Lonzi showed she is one of the top distance runners in
the state again. Her 1600 record was followed up with a great duel
with Lauren Zanger of Harbor Creek in the 3200.
“Our 4×100 and 4×400 relays both had great times. We dropped our
4×400 five seconds. All of the girls in it were tired but dug down
to give us the points we needed.
“All of these young ladies have had outstanding springs. Time
after time they have met every challenge and won. They are one of
the most determined groups we have ever coached.
“We also had good efforts from Bobbi Hopkins in the hurdles,
from Erica Pascarella in the high jump, Renee Cavallaro in the 3200
and Dana Carrico in the 4×100.
“Our javelin throwers – Whitney Cline and Megan Foster – threw
well. They were both in the mid-90 foot range and are coming along
fast.
“We have much left to do. We face a tough Elk County Catholic
team Tuesday and then have the Central Coaches Invitational on
Friday.
“We still have many things to improve on and decisions to make.
We have to finalize relays and set the district lineup. We need to
stay healthy and stay focused. As nice as this win is, it won’t
matter when we lineup this week.”
