DARK DAY: Raymond Tingley of Limestone, N.Y., wonders if any of
our readers can pinpoint the exact time and date in the 1950s when
the daytime skies darkened like night.
“The chickens went to roost. When it became light again, the
roosters crowed.
Along with the time and date, Raymond would like to know how
long it stayed dark and, of course, what caused the darkness.
We can’t remember details but do know that the skies grew dark
one day in the 1950s because of huge forest fires in Canada –
that’s what the government said at the time. If you have any
details, drop us a line.
GAS GAINS?: Jim Pringle has some input about the country’s gas
prices: “A couple of thoughts about your recent column about
Exxon’s Lee Raymond and high gas prices.
“I don’t know what gas prices are right now in Bradford but I
just paid $3.36 on Martha’s Vineyard. But with oil at $70 a barrel
there are a lot of wells pumping right now that weren’t a few years
ago. That translates into a lot of jobs. So it’s a double-edged
sword.
“Exxon- Mobil had its beginning as Standard Oil which was John
D. Rockefeller’s company. Old John D. had close ties with the
Bradford oilfield.”
IN THE NEWS: We’ve been following the “celebrity” of Justin
Willoughby of Bradford in his weight-loss battle, most recently
seeing a story on the Teen People website.
The article recounts Justin’s successful effort, losing, as of
the writing, in excess of 400 pounds through a daily regimen and
the support of family.
Included is “Justin’s Diary” which takes readers though a
typical day in his life including lengthy workouts at the Bradford
YMCA and meals comprised of low-calorie, low-fat food.
At his top weight, Justin tipped the scales at 799 pounds. He’s
been on the fitness crusade since 2003 and was down to 341 pounds
at the time of the Teen People article – a loss of 458 pounds.
Along with support of family and people at the YMCA, Justin asks
God’s help when the temptations come. “Whenever I’m hungry, I pray.
It makes my hunger cease. It works for me,” he said in his
journal.
Justin, 19, has been featured in several articles and on a few
TV shows. The Era first carried an article on his crusade late last
year.
