Lady Owls sweep doubleheader from Kane

The Bradford Lady Owls swept a doubleheader against Kane in high
school softball action Thursday.

The Lady Owls won the opener 6-2 and took the nightcap 1-0.

“These were two of the best softball games I’ve been a part of
in a long, long, time,” BAHS coach Sue Aljoe said. “Both teams
played outstanding ball all afternoon. We had to be at our best to
beat Kane today and we were.

“Mary Lou Sapko and I are so proud of the way the girls played
today. This was a total team effort. They covered for each other,
they hustled on every play and they delivered in the clutch.”

In the opener, Shelly Fuhrman fired a five-hitter and fanned
five to lead the Lady Owls.

“We can’t say enough about Shelly,” Aljoe enthused. “She pitched
her heart out in both games and helped herself out
offensively.”

At the plate for Bradford, Fuhrman and Hope Ruffner had two
singles apiece, Alissa Cameron and Brittany Harsen added an RBI
single each and Lyndsay Nuyen drilled a two-run double.

“Lyndsay Nuyen and Hope Matzner did a great job offensively and
defensively,” Aljoe noted. “Lyndsay turned in two double plays and
drove in three runs in our first game. Hope Matzner had a double
play in the second game and was always starting our rallies. Alissa
Cameron and Brittany Harsen both had key RBIs in the first
game.”

Kayla Swarts suffered the mound loss, allowing seven hits,
collecting five strikeouts and walking one.

For Kane, Brooke Martyna doubled while Trisha Johnson and
Marissa Cleer each added an RBI single.

Fuhrman hurled a two-hitter and whiffed three in the
nightcap.

In the sixth, Erin Comilla drove in Ruffner on a fielder’s
choice.

“Hope Ruffner, our catcher, threw out two runners and scored the
decisive run in the second game,” Aljoe continued. “Defensively,
Leanna Cameron caught everything hit to her in centerfield and Erin
Comilla and Nicole Keane made critical plays to protect our one-run
lead in the second game.”

On the hill, Swarts gave up three hits and whiffed seven in the
second game.

“I think we played the way we are capable of playing today,”
Aljoe concluded. “Kane is a tough, well-coached team. The girls
should be very proud of their wins over such a quality team.”

The Lady Owls (8-3) host Olean on Saturday.
