One inmate taken to BRMC after stabbing

As a result of an altercation between two inmates at Federal
Correctional Institution McKean, one inmate was taken to Bradford
Regional Medical Center Thursday at 7:40 p.m. with a puncture wound
to the neck.

The injured inmate, who was not named, also received a
superficial wound to his upper arm and was transported to the
hospital for treatment where he is in good condition, said Monica
Recktenwald, camp administrator and executive assistant, on
Friday.

“We expect a full recovery,” she said, adding that he would
likely be returned to the institution today.

“Our investigation is concluded. This is an isolated incident
between two inmates and we returned to normal operations (Friday)
morning,” she added.

“Inmates will have disagreements and one felt that the other
disrespected him so they fought,” she said.

The other inmate was not injured.

Recktenwald said the incident has been referred to the Assistant
United States Attorney for possible criminal prosecution.

She explained that staff on Thursday night called for a possible
Stat MedEvac helicopter, but after further evaluation of the
inmate’s condition, the call was canceled.

This is the second reported altercation between inmates at the
institution in one week.

On March 24, four staff were injured in an altercation between
two inmates. One staff member received stitches to his hand while
another had injuries to his knee and arm and two others received
superficial wounds.

The incident involved two inmates as well and prison officials
have sent the investigation report to the Assistant U.S. Attorney
for further review.

One of the inmates in that incident received a head injury and
was taken to a local hospital for X-rays following that incident.
The status of his condition is unknown.

In other institution business, the warden at FCI McKean learned
Thursday that he has been appointed to a new position. He was
selected to be Deputy Regional Director for the North East Regional
Office out of Philadelphia.

James F. Sherman has been the warden at FCI McKean since January
of 2004.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for him,” said Recktenwald.

There have been no dates announced yet as to when Sherman will
leave FCI McKean and no information available as to who the
replacement will be.
