GUY WILLY: After reading our item on WLMI, Tom Ewell passes
along information about another Kane radio station:[neWLine]
“”Kane had an AM radio station not that many years ago with the
call sign of WKZA at 960 MHz. I believe it was owned and operated
by a gentleman named Edward Lenaway whose used the microphone
moniker of Guy Willy.[neWLine]
“”Anybody that had a camp in Westline, Chapel Forks, or
boated/camped in the southern end of the dam will probably remember
him; he had a voice that could not be mistaken
anywhere.[neWLine]
“”This station apparently changed hands or folded after his
death, but the call letters are now shown to be issued to a radio
station in the Jamestown, N.Y., area – 106.9 KISS FM.[neWLine]
“”Many people speculated, and some said definitely that the KZA
was for the first, middle, and last letters of the word
Kinzua.[neWLine]
“”Also, why not mention some former Bradford radio station
personalities – Bill Winn to start with. Are any of them still
around?””[neWLine]
On another subject of recent RTS interest, Tom writes:
“”Regarding the Bradford Police Department of the 1940s and ’50s –
Lee Dennis I believe was either a lieutenant or
chief.””[neWLine]
“”Mr. Dennis lived in Smethport and after retiring from the City
P.D. he went to work for the Sheriff’s Department. He was also the
best gunsmith in the area.[neWLine]
“”There was also a gentleman named Mike Tancar (? on the
spelling) and I do mean a gentleman.””[neWLine]
[neWLine]
MORE COPS: Eleanor Edmonds of Bradford also writes to tell us
about some former city policemen:[neWLine]
“”My father-in-law, the late Edward Edmonds, was a long-time
Bradford chief of police during the 1930s and 40s. At his funeral,
one of the cops told me that he was a ‘fair’ man. He said, ‘If you
did something wrong, he chewed you out, and you didn’t forget it!
But if you did something good, he would acknowledge
that.'[neWLine]
“”Some of the cops of that period were Louis Straight, Frank
Pascarella, Leith Dennis, Dayle Thompson, ‘Derney’ Palazetti, Miles
Cline, Jim Cousins, Jack Deibler, Jack Arbuckle, Jack Gilmore, Pete
DePalma, Mike Dwyer, ‘Oscar’ Hagman, Art Dauer, John Woodley, (?)
McGraw and several others.[neWLine]
“”Grace Norton was the very efficient secretary and matron of
the women’s jail.””[neWLine]
[neWLine]
FOR SURE: Regarding the discrepancy in Mr. Dennis’ name – it was
Leith Dennis, and we’re fairly certain he was a lieutenant.
