Round the Square for March 20

GOOD IDEA: Sally De mellier passes along a good idea: “”Would
like to remind folks living in Bradford to tape shows of local
interest such as one mentioned in RTS column of flood, and send
tapes to family and friends living out of state. Tapes would make a
nice gift!””[neWLine]

DON CLARK: A note today from Nancy Tingley of Bradford that will
certainly jog some memories:[neWLine]

“”We live in Bradford in the summer, and winter in Florida. We
went to Bradford Day in New Port Richey, and what a thrill to see
Mr. Humphrey and his daughter there.[neWLine]

“”Glen and my dad, Don Clark, were partners in Clark and
Humphrey. They became partners in the store after Glen’s brother,
Charles, died. My Uncle Carleton was also a partner until he
died.[neWLine]

“”Mr. Humphrey was always a gentleman. He was well-dressed,
soft-spoken and kind to everyone.[neWLine]

“”Clark and Humphrey always put the customer first and prided
themselves on servicing everything they sold.[neWLine]

“”The store grew from a small store to one encompassing almost
the entire city block on Mechanic Street.[neWLine]

“”Mr. Humphrey was instrumental in adding furniture and
carpeting to the items sold, and he did much of the
ordering.[neWLine]

“”I remember as a little girl going there frequently and
visiting with everyone and how kind everyone was to the
children.[neWLine]

“”The store won lots of awards for sales, and Glen and his wife
went on a trip to Rome, Italy, and Dad and Mom went to
Hawaii.[neWLine]

“”Before people had TVs in their homes, Clark and Humphrey would
put TV sets in their windows, put chairs on the sidewalk and
outside speakers so people could sit and enjoy the World Series on
TV.[neWLine]

“”They also would have the Tappan salesmen come, and they would
cook a huge roast and serve sandwiches to everyone who came in the
door.[neWLine]

“”I remember the flood of ’48 and all of us came to the store.
The wives and children carried the small appliances to the second
floor, and the men carried the large ones. I don’t think anything
was damaged.[neWLine]

“”It was really a sad day when the store closed after being a
fixture in Bradford for over 50 years. My dad died of cancer in
1985.””
