WHAT IS IT?: Rich Herbstritt of Clarence Street stopped in the
office the other day to ask if anybody could identify a “”bug””
that was swimming in his fish tank.[neWLine]
Rich had just received a shipment of Florida gars and noticed
the little critter walking up the inside of the
aquarium.[neWLine]
“”They do swim,”” Rich said. “”He’s a good swimmer. And he can
walk upside down and backwards.””[neWLine]
Rich couldn’t figure out what the critter was, so he called
everyone he could think of who might know, including his uncle who
used to work for the Bradford Water Authority. No
luck.[neWLine]
The critter has a soft, clear body and lots of
legs.[neWLine]
Readers, any thoughts?[neWLine][neWLine]
ANOTHER COACH: A review of area coaches would not be complete
without mentioning Marge Holland.[neWLine]
Marge was a girls’ coach at Bradford Area High School of several
years and was instrumental on many sports fronts.[neWLine]
To begin with, Marge was the girls varsity basketball coach from
1966 to 1981. She actually established the girls’ basketball
program for District IX. In the early years of the program, the
Bradford teams would have to travel to Erie and Pittsburgh to
compete.[neWLine]
Under Marge, the teams achieved seven straight district
championships. In 1976, the team was number 1 in the West and
second in the state.[neWLine]
The fact that the girls were able to do so well in the play-offs
is even more fascinating given the girls’ in District IX played
their basketball season in the fall. The state playoffs were in
March. This gave the local athletes a three-month layoff before
they were in the playoffs.[neWLine]
She also started the girls’ track team in Bradford and also
coached golf during her tenure in the school district.[neWLine]
Perhaps more important, Marge started litigation which paved the
way for those who coached female sports to receive the same pay as
those who coached boys’ sports.[neWLine]
She’s a coach with quite a history, indeed.
