Port Allegany man jailed for allegedly dropping baby down stairs

A Port Allegany man was sent to McKean County Jail Tuesday after
he allegedly dropped a 2-month-old infant down a flight of
stairs.

Darien Dunsing, 29, was charged with dropping an infant down a
flight of stairs at his residence at 301 Harrison St., the morning
of Feb. 24, while he was allegedly under the influence of both
alcohol and an illegal, controlled substance, according to court
reports.

He was arraigned Tuesday in front of District Justice Rich
Luther and charged with endangering the welfare of children, a
first-degree misdemeanor, and reckless endangerment, a
second-degree misdemeanor, court records said.

A patrolman from the Port Allegany Borough Police was contacted
by employees of Charles Cole Memorial Hospital in Coudersport
regarding suspected child abuse when the baby boy was initially
taken to the hospital by his mother, Jamie Pearsall, also of 301
Harrison St., Port Allegany.

Court records indicate that between 6 and 8 a.m. Feb. 24,
Dunsing was responsible for the child, and during that time,
dropped the child down some stairs “causing life-threatening injury
to (the baby’s) head while he (Dunsing) was under the influence of
an illegal controlled substance and alcohol.”

Moreover, the defendant failed to seek immediate medical
attention for the child, who was taken to Charles Cole at 11 a.m.
by Pearsall. Once at the hospital, Dunsing failed to provide
information about how the baby was injured.

The baby was eventually taken by helicopter to Geisinger Medical
Center in Danville, where there was no information on his condition
Thursday.

Dunsing was committed to McKean County Jail in Smethport in lieu
of $30,000 strait bail, records said.

Reports were unclear regarding the relationship between Dunsing
and Pearsall, or Dunsing and the infant.
