Panthers open with victory

HARRISONBURG, Va. – For the first time in a long time,
Pitt-Bradford’s baseball team opened the season with a victory – a
13-7 decision over Eastern Mennonite University on Friday.

“We’re really happy,” said Bret Butler, Pitt-Bradford skipper.
“This is the first time in a lot of years that we’ve opened the
season with a win.”

Chad Yohe came on in relief of starter Jeremy Gulich after 1 2/3
innings to scatter four hits and strike out seven on the way to the
win.

Nate Chrisman took the loss for EMU.

“We gave up three runs in the first inning and had to come back
from a three-run deficit,” Butler explained. “That says a lot and
we came back the very next inning to put up six runs.”

Leading the offensive charge were Justin Schoening (2-for-4,
3-run homer, double, 4 RBI), Dom Morelli (3-for-4, double, RBI),
Brandon LaBrozzi (3-for-4, 3 RBI, double), Shawn Manning (3-for-4)
and John Callahan (2-for-5, 2 RBI).

On the base paths, Jimmer Colestro ripped off a pair of bases
and Morelli swiped one bag.

“We had a very good day,” Butler declared. “Aside from the
normal mistakes from being on the dirt for the first time since
October, we played pretty good baseball today.”

The Panthers (1-0) are back in action at noon today with a
doubleheader against Eastern Mennonite.
