IN THE NEWS: A photo of that fabulous mural on the side of a
building in Mount Jewett appeared in a recent edition of the
Atlanta Journal-Constitution, we’ve been told.[neWLine]
Bruce Burdick, owner of that same building, tells us it
accompanied a lead article about Punxsutawny Phil in the travel
section. “”Must have been submitted by the State tourism Office,””
he writes.[neWLine]

GAS PAINS?: We heard last week from Gus Gocella: “”We are
wintering in Tennessee and the gasoline prices currently are
$2.12/gallon. Recently returned from Galveston, Texas, and the
price in ‘oil country’ was $2.19/gallon.””[neWLine]
“”Recently we saw in RTS that is was $2.45/gallon in Bradford,
‘The Oil Metropolis of the World.’ I am sure everyone there gets
tired of reading about prices from everywhere else, especially
since Bradford’s prices are always higher.””[neWLine]
But today, we get the last laugh. At the time of this writing,
Bradford prices had hit $2.14 a gallon so, at least for the moment,
we’re competitive with the rest of the world.[neWLine]

POST SCRIPT: Jerry Kleisath, who had written to us about Galco
Park, sends a note concerning a response to his
inquiry:[neWLine]
“”Leo Hackett mentioned a young girl being killed on Burbank
crossing. She was one of three killed on our farm. In 1935 or ’36,
a Thomas was killed in a car wreck. He died on our front porch. In
the early ’40s Mike Ross was killed at the intersection of Route 46
and the crossing. At the same place in August 1956, the girl was
killed. I believe her name was Ramona Lathrop but I don’t know her
married name.””[neWLine]

ON JALOPY: A final note on Jalopy Suppa, this time from Pat
Johnston: “”Oh, man, do I remember Mr. Jalopy. As a kid growing up
in Bradford I remember seeing him and I guess his brother walking
from store front to the meter.””[neWLine]
“”Sometimes I think about him and all the other folks who made
Bradford what it was back then. Not only do we not have the cool
nicknames like then but the people themselves would be impossible
to replace. I often tell folks where I live now about them but, as
usual, I guess you had to be there.””
