TODAY’S QUOTE: “”There is no new thing to be said about Lincoln.
There is no new thing to be said of the mountains, or of the sea,
or of the stars. The years go their way, but the same old mountains
lift their granite shoulders above the drifting clouds; the same
mysterious sea beats upon the shore; the same silent stars keep
holy vigil above a tired world.[neWLine]
“”But to the mountains and sea and stars men turn forever in
unwearied homage.[neWLine]
“”And thus with Lincoln. For he was a mountain in grandeur of
soul. He was a sea in deep undervoice of mystic loneliness. He was
a star in steadfast purity of purpose and service. And he
abides.””[neWLine]
This fitting tribute was said by Homer Hoch of Kansas, in a
speech in the U.S. House of Representative on Feb. 12, 1923. Our
thanks to James Gelston of Bradford who suggested we use the
comment to mark Lincoln’s birthday, Feb. 12.[neWLine]

SUPER FANS: George and Sue Evans of Bradford returned from three
days in Detroit for Super Bowl 40. George and Sue, who are longtime
Steeler ticketholders, were happy to see that the Canadian border
guards all seemed to be Steeler fans and wished the team
well.[neWLine]
The security at Ford Field – which is one of most impressive,
attractive stadiums anywhere – also seemed more intense than at
most airports, George tells us.[neWLine]
Susan, who is a native of Pittsburgh, has seen many exciting
games, but she said this one was the culmination of many great
years of football for the Steelers. No wonder there’s a 15-year
waiting list for Steelers’ season tickets![neWLine]

‘CRUM’ REPORT: Former Bradfordian Robert Farquharson of
Henrietta, Texas, has a note to add to our recent stories about
Crum Robarts: “”A little-known fact, if at all, about Crum Robarts
was that he was a glider mechanic during WWII.””[neWLine]
“”He also was the only Bradfordian that attended my wedding over
62 years ago in Lubbock, Texas. I met and married my wife, Fay
Ruth, while training as a glider pilot at South Plains Army Air
Field in Lubbock, where he and I were stationed.[neWLine]
“”While he was a glider mechanic his talent as a gambler had
many GIs indebted to him by working many of his tours of duty. Crum
certainly was one of Bradford’s ‘one and only’ but none more honest
and nicer.””
