CARROLLTON, N.Y. -ðA Western New York & Pennsylvania
Railroad train of at least 40 cars derailed Thursday morning in
Carrollton.
According to personnel at the Cattaraugus County Emergency
Dispatch Center, no one was injured. Also, the derailment of the 40
cars, which were carrying coal, did not cause any road
closures.
In fact, the emergency dispatch center did not receive a single
call from residents near the incident, the dispatcher said.
Cattaraugus County was notified of the incident by the railroad
officials, she added.
The eastbound train derailed in the area of the former
Lackawanna Railroad line near the Great Valley/Carrollton line,
reports indicate. The line is apparently not visible from Route
417.
The center was notified of the derailment between 8 and 9 a.m.
Thursday, she said, and the railroad officials told them at that
time the incident had occurred “a couple of hours earlier.” Some
reports indicate the incident took place at 4 a.m.
It will take crews at least a week to clean up the site, the
dispatcher said.
A representative for Western New York & Pennsylvania
Railroad’s vice president and general manager Stephen M. Timko in
Falconer referred questions to William D. Burt, the railroad’s
president and chief operating officer, in Lakeville.
A voice mail message left for Burt Friday afternoon was not
returned Friday night.
There was no further information Friday night at press time.
