Desperation shot falls short for Panthers

A shot at the buzzer wouldn’t fall as Pitt-Bradford dropped a
77-74 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference decision to
Pitt-Greensburg at the Sport & Fitness Center on Friday.

Dan Thomas saw his three-point attempt from the right wing
bounce off the rim and into the awaiting hands of the Bobcats’ Duke
Cooper.

“We wanted to get Ryan Race coming off a screen, and if not, get
Danny (Thomas) something,” said Andy Moore, Pitt-Bradford head
coach. “You don’t want to be in those situations where there’s a
rebound late in the game. It was one of those games where we had
our chances. It’s very frustrating because we’ve been in a lot of
games like that. We’ve been close but not quite good enough.”

The Panthers led 20-10 with 12:42 left in the first half before
the visitors rallied for a 36-all deadlock at the intermission.

“It looked like in the first half they (Bobcats) were tired and
we got up by 10,” Moore recalled. “We thought we could get the lead
up to 12 or 14 by halftime, but we let them back into it.”

In the second half, the biggest advantage was six points for the
Panthers and four for Greensburg (7-3, 9-8). There were five ties
and three lead changes.

“The second half was back-and-forth and back-and-forth and came
down to a couple of key rebounds,” Moore noted. “We’re small and
I’m asking a lot of these guys. When we need a rebound in the worst
way, we don’t seem to get it.”

Thomas led all scorers with 23 points, Race had 21 points and
eight rebounds, Rob Copley contributed 12 points and nine boards,
and Jon Hannon had six assist for the Panthers.

“Danny (Thomas) is playing hard and it’s the best he’s played in
his career here,” Moore declared. “He was sick tonight and played
his heart out. Ryan (Race) always gives you a great effort.”

Pitt-Bradford (7-10, 4-6) will host Frostburg State (7-10, 4-6)
tonight at 6 p.m.

“We really needed both of these games and now we have to get
one,” Moore concluded.
