RTS for Friday

BIRD NOTE: It seems this winter that residents either have a ton
of birds – or none.

Debbie Timblin of Hazel Hurst tells us she’s had mourning doves,
cardinals, bluejays and chickadees at her feeder as well as an
assortment of squirrels and chipmunks.

Deer also visit and one doe in particular knows how to tip over
the bird feeder and help herself to the goodies, Debbie tells
us.

GALICO PARK: Jerry Kleisath has a question for readers: “Does
anyone remember Galico Park located on Burbank Crossing between
Smethport and Crosby?”

“It was named after early settlers by the name of Gallup and
Comes. There was a big pavilion located near Potato Creek, but it
got washed out during the ’42 flood.

“Square dances were held there and I believe the band was Happy,
Ed and Jack. During the 1950s they played on Saturday night at the
Rew firehall. Also in the early ’50s the Lemons played for
dances.

“Anyone remember dancing to their music?”

50 YEARS: Some of us remember the Hotel Emery when it was a
hotel, long before it became a dormitory for the University of
Pittsburgh at Bradford students in the late 1960s and later, as
apartments for senior citizens.

When we happened upon an advertisement in the Jan. 20, 1956,
Era, we realized how different Bradford was back then, when there
was a market for late “Sunday Night Supper Snacks” at the hotel’s
coffee shop.

We thought we’d share the rather genteel – by today’s fast-food
standards – menu fare served from 5-10 p.m. Sunday nights at the
Hotel Emery Coffee Shop, as published in the Era 50 years ago. (And
yes, take a look at those prices!)

TODAY’S QUOTE: “Truth can be outraged by silence quite as
cruelly as by speech,” said writer Amelia E. Barr, 1886. As always,
