RTS for Thursday

OOPS: We were reminded that we had missed Bradford native and
opera superstar Marilyn Horne’s birthday. So a belated “Happy
Birthday” to her, for Monday, Jan. 16.

LANE LINES: Kay Roth Ordiway shares some personal insight into
our recent columns about the “old days” of bowling in Bradford:

“Back in the early 1940s, my dad, John Roth, who was mentioned
in an earlier RTS column, was the owner of the Recreation Bowling
Alleys (as they were called then) on East Main Street, the later
site of the Orak Grotto.

“The alleys consisted of two floors and the lower floor was some
times used for duck pin bowling!

“Yes, Daddy had two perfect 300 games in ABC-sanctioned league
bowling and one in non-sanctioned. I have the beautiful medals to
prove.

“In those days, it was a real rarity to have a perfect game –
the balls and lanes were not specially ‘dressed’ as now.

“Some of the bowling names I recall from the past are Joe and
Theda Young, Bob and Freida (Pete) Fuller, Agatha Iverson, Rita
Pecora Lonzi, Mary Roemer, Dot and Ralph McGibbeny, Marge and Llew
Dolaway, Ed and Zella Schupp, Mike Fire, Harry Feidt, Jimmy
Shortell, my Mom Catherine Roth, and so many more that don’t come
quickly to mind.

“Pinsetters were Pat Costello, the Means boys, Rudy Serafini and
dozens more.

“I was pleased to talk to Rudy before he passed and he had fond
memories of my parents and the Rec.

“Upon the death of my dad, the alleys were sold to Mike Bagnato
Sr. and removed to the current Byllye Lanes on Seaward Avenue.

“On a personal note I recall riding on the sander as my dad
refinished the hardwood lanes and watched him redo the wooden pins
and go with him to Brunswick Corp. in Buffalo to buy. Channels were
called gutters and there were no automatic ball returns!”

REX NOTE: We hear from Barney Snyder about the ongoing reports
about Airman Jamie Himes Dana and her famous dog, Rex.: “Great
story about her. On the local news here in Tucson they ran a short
on her and her dog – CBS. I get so torqued at idiots who have
negative comments. That Georgia jerk ought to enlist and use his
energy constructively. Anyone who has every owned a dog would know
how she feels. End of that story.”
