‘INN’ PLACE: The conclusion today of our excerpt from
Arrington’s Inn Traveler about Smethport’s historical Christmas
Inn:

“Curious trinkets of Americana still survive on the main floor
of the inn. There is an oak-cased electric announcer that uses
levers to show servants the location of visitors wishing to enter.
When the doorbell sounds, the corresponding lever rotates upward,”
writes Les Jordan Jr.

“… The dining room is paneled in hand-rubbed mahogany that is as
smooth as glass.

“Meals served in the dining area are homemade by Phyllis, who
varies her menu daily. A typical breakfast includes quiche, sausage
and compote as the main course. Juice and fresh fruit are also
included, as is freshly baked bread, cinnamon rolls, muffins or
zucchini bread. Classical music and the Simms’ country friendliness
add the finishing touch to the warm, inviting meal.

“The upstairs bedrooms are just as elegant as the downstairs
living areas. There are eight rooms with warm names like Peace,
Wisdom, Love and Charity.

“Three classes of rooms are offered: deluxe, super deluxe and
executive/honeymoon. While each room radiates its original
Victorian beauty, soft comforters decorated in fine patterns of
delicate Americana lend a soft and cozy feeling into each room.
Computer tables and chairs are in each room, along with telephones
with outside connections, televisions and air-conditioning. Private
baths are attached, and the executive honeymoon suite named Love on
the top floor contains a jacuzzi for two.

“The outside of the house includes a large front porch with
white wicker rockers for relaxing outdoors. The columned porch
served as a historical backdrop for the annual reunion of the
Pennsylvania Bucktail Regiment in the summer of 2002. The
historical group is composed of descendants of the famed Civil War
regiment organized in Smethport in 1891 that distinguished itself
in countless battles, including Gettysburg.

“Outside, Christmas lights are kept burning throughout the year.
The lights generate a warm, friendly invitation to travelers
visiting the Smethport area to come inside, relax and experience
the rich tradition found at The Christmas Inn and the town of
Smethport. …”

“A stay at the inn is much more than a brief vacation. It is a
memorable experience in a quaint, friendly town full of Victorian
ambiance, striking beauty and lofty peace. It is a ‘timeless
journey through history!'”

The article is accompanied by color photos of the outside and
inside of the inn.
