PUNXSUTAWNEY – A 22-point third-quarter effort keyed Bradford
High to a 62-52 District 9 League win over Punxsutawney in boys
hoops Friday.
Eric Arnett sparked the charge, scoring 10 of his team-high 20
points in the period.
“I thought we played real well in the second half,” declared BHS
coach Dave Fuhrman. “It was a tight game at halftime – we were up
one (24-23) – but we came out and played well.
“Eric got established inside. He ran the floor well and we did a
good job of getting the ball inside to him.”
In addition to Arnett’s 20 points, Shane Hvizdzak contributed 15
marks and Tom Morris tallied 10 marks for the Owls (2-4 overall,
1-1 league), who halted a four-game losing streak.
“We kind of decided this was going to be the start of a new
season for us,” Fuhrman explained. “We put the first five games
behind us and chalked it up to experience. Even though we lost four
in a row, we’ve played good competition and I think that helped us
in this game.”
Fuhrman praised the play of his entire team.
“We got good contributions from everybody. Our three
letterwinners (Arnett, Hvizdzak, Morris) were in double figures,
which is good, balanced scoring,” Fuhman observed. “We also got
good contributions off the bench from Ryan LaBrozzi and Tyler
Hopkins.”
The Owls shot 24-for-57 from the field for a 42 percent showing,
outrebounded the hosts 28-24 and forced 18 turnovers.
“We had 14 offensive rebounds, so that’s a good stat for us,”
Fuhrman remarked.
Ben Lanich led the way with six boards, while Morris hauled in
five. Hvizdzak dished out seven assists and grabbed three
steals.
Dennis Manges’ paced the Chucks (1-4) with a game-high 22 points
and Kolby Mumau chipped in with 12.
“This was a real nice win for us on the road,” Fuhrman
emphasized. “This is one of the toughest places to play in the
league and I’m proud of how the guys played here on the road.
The Owls have a quick turnaround, as they take on Meadville at
Allegheny College at 2:30 p.m. today.
