RIFLE TEAM: We’ve been remiss in our reporting on great Bradford
sports teams of the past – as Lee Sittig of Bradford reminds
us:
“Speaking of undefeated teams in Round the Square: In the early
’70s, the BAHS rifle team won a national title and had at least
three teams in the top ten in the same year. Richard Giddings was
the coach.
“I feel that the coach and the men and women who participated on
this team should be acknowledge also in Round the Square as a
national title is no small accomplishment for a small town like
ours.”
We agree. Bradford High rifle teams are legendary.
QUEEN: It will take an act of Congress – literally – for Hazel
Hurst native Jamie Dana to be permitted to keep Rex, her military
dog. Our reporters have been following this story and it appears
Rex may get to retire with Jamie. Here’s hoping.
Meanwhile, we heard from L.J. Gorske of Johnsonburg, who was a
tech sergeant from 1943-1946 in World War II: “The photo of Jamie
Himes (Dana) and her K-9 companion brought back many memories
because I, too, served in the Army K-9 Corps, World War II, 228th
Engineers, Mine Detection.”
“When the war ended I tried to get Queen but the owner
originally donated Queen to the Army with the understanding she
would be returned if she survived at war’s end. Needless to say, I
was heartbroken but the owners kept in touch with me throughout
Queen’s lifetime.”
SAME STATE?: Pennsylvania is a huge state and, if you don’t
believe that, consider this note from James M. Chartreau of
Lancaster:
“I was reading the Era online and was talking to my mom at the
same time. Mom told me my dad measured 10 inches of snow at their
house in Lewis Run. Here in Lancaster it’s sunny and 29 degrees
with no snow, yet!
“She also told me about gas prices are $2.20 a gallon average
there. Here, it ranges from $1.98 to $2.15 a gallon depending on
what part of Lancaster County you are in. Amazing, how it can
differ from one part of the state to another.”
Yes, and why is it we get the short end of the stick on both
counts – weather and gas prices?
