KIND ACT: Aldene Anderson of Dunkirk, N.Y., writes us: “Recently
reading the Round the Square article, which my sister Nancy
Leichner, a Bradford resident, so often sends to me, was one by a
man from Oil City who received a ‘Random Act of Kindness’ in
Bradford.
“This seems like the means by which I can thank an ‘unknown
person’ for an act of kindness to our family.
Aldene continues: “Back in 2002, my husband, Jack Anderson, was
one of three World War II veterans who had not been able to
graduate with their 1946 class due to enlisting in the service of
their country. They were made honorary members of the Class of
2002. It was a meaningful event for us and others.
“Before we left Bradford for our various homes, we went for a
late dinner to Perkin’s Restaurant, all eight of us. When I went to
pay the bill, I was informed that there was ‘no charge for our
dinner … it has been paid for by someone else.’ They would give no
name, and even though I asked several others who we could guess
would do such a kindness, all answers were, ‘We did not do it, but
isn’t it a grand kindness?’ “
“So, at this time and by this method, may I say ‘thank you’ to
whoever you are, and God bless you for your act of kindness – in
Bradford.”
A QUESTION: “Would it be possible to arrange an interview with
someone at United Refinery and ask them why Bradford car drivers
pay 15-20 cents more per gallon for gas than nearby towns.”
“Is it because Bradford is a dynamic, wealthy area loaded with
wealthy citizens? Why are we the ‘privileged’ few who carry the
profitability ball for United Refinery?”
That question was in our e-mail this week.
We hope it is rhetorical because we’ve contacted United Refinery
in Warren quite a few times over the years, and this is not a
subject they feel they must discuss. Apparently, the owners – and
the government – believe pricing strategies are proprietary matters
in a free-market economy.
Over the years, we’ve had a few politicians interested in
getting this answer but were either unable or unwilling to get to
the root of the problem. Go figure.
