p>WRONG AGAIN: That former Oakland Raider from St. Marys is
Dan Conners – not Dan Conner as we had told our readers the other
day. If any of our readers in St. Marys know what Conners is doing
these days, please drop us a line.
NOT US: We had a question about a supposed Bradford illustrator
but got this quick response from Sally Costik, curator for Bradford
Landmark Society:
“Your inquiry as to West Bradford illustrator by the name of
William Thomas Smedleyð that appeared in Tuesday’s Round the Square
– You can stop your query; West Bradford is nowhere near here, its
in Chester County.ðWish we could claim him, but no…”
We thought “West Bradford” was a bit odd but figured that such a
locale may have existed some years ago in this vicinity.
PET PEEVE: Luther D. Dromgold of Bradford passes along his
complaint for the day:
“The first thing I have done in the morning for years was to
watch the Weather Channel on the cable. Wanted to see what the
prediction was for the day, and also what the radar screen looked
like. Not any more. No more local forecast is being shown. Same
thing as if I gave up my subscription to the cable and went to a
dish.
“No point in watching the Weather Channel on TV for what the
weather is going to be. What are they trying to do, save some
money, but lose a customer?”
THAT SPELLING: We are not alone in our confusion over the
spelling of “Allegany,” “Allegheny,” and “Alleghany.”
Mary Fairbanks passes along some information about a town in
Oregon with similar difficulties. She apparently gleaned this from
a website about post offices in the United States.
The entry reads, “Allegheny is the modern spelling of a Delaware
word for the Allegheny and Ohio rivers. This form is used for many
features in the United States, including the Allegheny Mountains in
the eastern United States and for a county, city, and river in
Pennsylvania, while the spelling Allegany is used for a number of
features in the state of New York.”
The particular post office (97407), it says, “was established
March 25, 1893, with William Vincamp first postmaster. The compiler
has been unable to learn why the spelling Allegany was selected
rather than the form Allegheny.”
