Terminal building not in historic district

It’s close, but no cigar.

Upon further investigation, it was discovered that the Terminal
Building, located on the corner of South Avenue and Chautauqua
Place, is not in the historic district, but just a few feet
away.

A map of the historic district shows the building lies just feet
away from the boundary line of the historic district which includes
the other side of the street on Chautauqua Place.

A call to Sally Costik, curator of the Bradford Landmark
Society. Wednesday proved that the building did not make the list
developed about eight years ago.

She said Bradford had an Historical Architectural Review Board
before the present board. She said the boundaries of the historic
district were different at that time and with a new consultant from
Brookville, they were able to come up with a new plan.

According to the Bradford Historic District map, Taylor &
Taylor Associates Inc., Historic Preservation & Community
Development Specialists of Brookville, created of the new map.

Costik said the representative who developed it took the time to
research records, walk the streets and learn the area to prepare a
proposed map of a “new” historic district.

She said the criteria he used to develop the map included
learning the age of construction for each building along with its
history. He then determined that buildings built before 1950 should
be included on the list.

She added that is how the Zippo Administration Building on
Barbour Street did not get included. “And it should be. But it was
built in 1959.”

Costik also said that many of the buildings he included in his
map are no longer in the district as they have been torn down due
to poor condition or have burned beyond salvaging from fire.

She explained currently there are buildings within the historic
district that are non-contributing. But the Terminal Building is
not one of them.

A call to owner Edna Hallock about her intended plans with the
building did not produce an answer Wednesday afternoon.
