HELLO!: If you’re a member of the “coffee club” at Lakeview
Senior Care and Living Center in Smethport, we’re writing to say
hello! Our old buddy Eleanor Hand is a guest at the Center and
tells us “there’s a lot of people here getting help.” We’re glad to
hear that and pass along our morning greetings.
UFO?: Pat Causer of Port Allegany drops us a line: “On Thursday,
while driving east on the back road toward Roulette, we saw a
parachute coming down ’til it went behind the hills. Does anyone
know anything about this?”
GAS NOTES: We’d sworn off reporting about gas prices just after
Katrina hit, but we need to get back on track.
One reader tells us that the price of a gallon of regular
unleaded in Brookville “the other day” was $2.28 a gallon.
Dane Surra writes, “How do you spell gas? Gouge! I was in Erie
over the weekend and purchased gasoline for $2.269 per gallon.
Around the Olean area it is still over $2.709 per gallon. Over 40
cents difference? The question is still, why?”
On Tuesday, we received a letter from Shirley and Al DelMonego:
“Coming home on 10/24 from our son’s home in Chester Springs, Pa.,
these are the gas prices we encountered:
Chester Springs, $2.45
Pennsylvania Turnpike, $2.52
From Lewistown to Ridgway, $2.29
Johnsonburg and Ridgway, $2.39 and $2.37
Then when we reach Lewis Run and Bradford, the price was $2.58,
the highest of all, even the turnpike which is always higher. Who
can figure?
P.S. I don’t think there are refineries in that area.”
Putting the icing on the cake Thursday was Cecelia Prosser of
Ormsby who wanted to put in her “two cents.”
Cecelia, who drives daily from Bradford to DuBois to Clarion and
back to Bradford, gets a constant reminder of the disparity in
prices from hither to yon.
In every town, Sheetz was selling gas for $2.39 and even a
Country Fair had it for $2.29 in Clarion. What was Bradford’s going
price? It was $2.57.
“Who’s keeping Sheetz out of Bradford?” she wondered, and also
suggested irate consumers contact the Pennsylvania State Attorney
General about the discrepancy in prices.
On Tuesday, we also had a report that the Sheetz price in Port
Allegany and Coudersport was $2.35.
Still more on this subject soon.
