ATTA GIRL!: When Marilyn Horne received the Governor’s Award on
Tuesday, she got an “atta girl” from the old hometown.

Bradford Creative and Performing Arts Center sent the following
message to Marilyn:

“Dear Jackie – A little girl once sang in a town square in a
small town in Pennsylvania and soon the whole world came to listen.
Your friends back in Bradford take great pride in you. You continue
to show how – through your international career and your foundation
– that one person can make a difference and one voice can help
change the world. Congratulations!”

It was signed by Jim Guelfi, president, and the BCPAC board
members.

We understand a group from BCPAC and Pitt-Bradford also attended
the event.

GAS PRICES: Tony Lombardi writes us, “This past Friday, Oct. 14,
2005, I returned home from a weeklong business trip to Puerto Rico
which is located about 1,000 miles southeast of Miami, Fla., and is
roughly the size of Rhode Island.”

“For such a small island, nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and
the Caribbean Sea, the gasoline prices in PR are at about $ 2.33
per gallon. I found these prices to be extraordinary, compared to
local prices. Especially when you consider that they have no
refineries on the island and all of their gasoline comes from St.
Thomas or Venezuela.”

CON MAN: We had a request for information about an incident
which occurred in the 1950s – maybe you can help.

Laura Ishler wrote to us, “I am trying to find some information
about an incident that happened in the 1950s. … In about 1950 or
so, a con man came to Johnsonburg and told everyone he was the
famous Notre Dame football player, Joe Savoldi. He was wined and
dined by the locals all summer. He eventually took off and tried to
pass himself off as an FBI man. He was arrested in Bradford.”

Intriguing story. If you can held Laura in her research, let us
know and we’ll pass along her contact information.

AN IDEA: If you need some lab work done and don’t want to face
the construction going on at Bradford Regional Medical Center,
here’s an idea: Go to the Outpatient Lab at Union Square instead.
The hospital obviously also thought of this alternative and
extended hours at the Union Square facility. It’s now open 6
a.m.-2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
