SILLY STUFF: There’s cork, dork, fork, stork, torque and
Mork.

Our readers didn’t hesitate to find words which rhyme with a
list of “un-rhymables” from 100 years ago which we printed in a
recent column – one of which was “pork.”

Here’s some other suggestions:

Porch and torch.

Puss and bus (although we don’t think this is acceptable because
they sound dissimilar).

Forge and gorge.

Volt and colt.

Peart and hurt.

Alb and bulb.

Hemp and kemp.

(We are a little dubious about those last couple but, heck, they
seem close enough.)

Sheila Oliver of Bradford drops us a line and adds a few more to
that list:

Eighth and faith.

Forth and north.

Hemp and temp.

Of and dove, love, glove, shove and above.

Puss and cuss (again, different sounds…)

Sauce and loss, moss, boss and toss.

Scarp and barf.

Volt and bolt.

AND ALSO: Sheila also has a suggestion for an un-rhymable word –
orange.

Newsroom denizens also had a couple others, purple, tibula and
metacarpal.

ONE MORE: And we got this little observation from Chuck Arnold
of Milford, Ohio: “I must be missing something in ‘Rhyme Time.’
Does not the listed word that can not be rhymed, ‘volt’ rhyme with
jolt and colt? Shall we now try about 59 words that can’t be
rhymed?”

PET PEEVE: One of our perpetual pet peeves is the location of
tags on clothing. Or, should we say, the change of the
location!

It’s a tedious enough job to sort piles of laundry by color and
fabric, etc., but that pales in comparison to yet another sorting
for washing and drying instructions.

It used to be that all clothes had the “care instructions” on
the back of the collar. Some continue that, but others have moved
the tag to an inseam. It’s great to finally have the little tag in
your hand, and begin to read the instructions – in Spanish!

OK, so it’s a minor gripe. But those are the ones that send you
over the edge.
