Cable problems persist

A year has passed since I fired off a column on the poor
reception of Major League Baseball playoff games on our local FOX
television station.

Not much has changed. In fact it’s still the same.

After a busy Tuesday night in the newsroom, I took the
opportunity to turn on the Angels-Yankees playoff game. And to no
surprise, the reception was snowy.

There is a strong following of Yankees fans in the Bradford
area. You would think an effort would have been made to improve the
reception over the last year.

James Romanelli of Bradford dropped off a note to the newsroom
Wednesday voicing his frustration.

“How many people are having a problem with Channel 8?” Romanelli
asks. “Last night (Tuesday) trying to watch the ballgame you
couldn’t see nothing but snow.

“You pay $50 per month and you have to put up with this.
Something has to be done.”

I agree!

Hinsdale (N.Y.) Central School will play a varsity football game
for the first time in seven years this weekend.

The Bobcats will travel to Buffalo Nichols for a Saturday
contest.

Rod Rohl is coaching the 25-man Hinsdale team.

Earlier this year, it was announced Hinsdale would bring back
football for the 2006 season. This year the school has had five
scrimmages.

Hinsdale dropped its football program after going 7-3 in 1997
because of declining numbers.

Several local players are among the top 10 in rushing, receiving
and passing in District 9, according to D9Sports.com.

Kyle Oakes of Kane ranks second with 730 yards on 86 rushes,
Coudersport’s David Babcock is third with 680 yards on 80 carries,
Port Allegany’s Cody Anderson is fifth with 558 yards on 98 carries
and Smethport’s Josh Switzer is seventh with 519 yards on 108
carries.

In receiving, Cory Brown of Otto-Eldred is fourth with 344 yards
(17 receptions), Shad Boschert of St. Marys is fifth with 331 yards
(16 receptions), John Bizzak of Kane is eighth with 246 yards (13
receptions) and Kevin Genevro of Elk County Catholic is ninth with
240 yards (12 receptions).

Lucas Wendel of St. Marys is third in passing yards (747),
Travis Bair of Otto-Eldred is fifth (698), Zach Anderson of Kane is
seventh (570) and Willie Bova of Port Allegany is 10th (547).

The owners of a new minor league franchise have reached an
agreement to buy the Class A New Jersey Cardinals and said they
intend to relocate the team to Pennsylvania next season.

The agreement must be approved by the New York-Penn League and
Minor League Baseball, Curve Baseball LP said in a statement this
week. The ownership group runs the Class AA Altoona Curve, which is
an affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The New Jersey franchise still has one year remaining in its
player development contract with the St. Louis Cardinals, so the
new State College team will take the field as a Cardinals’
affiliate next year, the Curve said.

They will play in a ballpark being constructed across the street
from Beaver Stadium on Penn State University grounds. The minor
league franchise and the Penn State baseball team will share the
facility.

The nickname and logo of the relocated minor league team have
yet to be unveiled.

The New Jersey Cardinals had played in Augusta, N.J., since
1994.
