Kirkland sets course record in BHS win

Steve Kirkland set a cross country school record in leading
Bradford to a 15-49 victory over St. Marys on Tuesday.

“Steve had lost the school record to Jared Feura on Saturday so
he was determined to get it back,” BAHS coach Tom Tessena said.

Kirkland toured the 3.1-mile hilly course in 16:56. Only
Smethport’s Ben Hahn has run faster.

Jared Feura pushed Kirkland for most of the race and took second
place.

Senior Ben Moran ran a strong race to take the third
position.

Colton Langianese came on to take fourth place. Anthony
Cavallaro and Mike Foerstner also ran well, takingðthe next two
places.ð

St. Marys’ Ben Huey broke up the Bradford pack to take 7th in a
solid time of 18:43.

Rich Bartlebaugh placed 8th, while Shroy Mukerjee was 9th and
Jarret Clarke rounded out the top 10.

Also running for Bradford were Patrick Perschke who was 11th in
19:43, John Karrasch 12th in 20:25 and Ben Pfeil 13th in 21:20.ð

“St. Marys has a young team. I think they ran pretty good for
the first time on this course,” Tessena added. “Ben Huey will
definitely be in contention for a state qualifying spot at
districts. Coach Granche does a good job and always seems to
develop strong distance men at St. Marys.

“Overall, I think our top six guys really ran well. Steve wasn’t
100 percent on Saturday and I think he wanted to show that he was
our top guy.

“Breaking 17:00 is extremely difficult on our course and he made
it look easy. He is definitely the Fuhrman Chiropractic Runner of
the Meet. I think he appreciated Jared Feura pushing him all the
way. Jared is one of our co-captains and he really takes his job
seriously as does the other captain, Ben Moran.

“Ben, Anthony Cavallaro, Mike Foerstner and Colton Langianese
push themselves hard every day along with Steve and Jared. We need
everyone on the team to make that step.

“This is going to be our toughest week of practice because we
have no meet on Saturday. If we are going to do well in the big
meets we have to work hard every day. We need to get everyone on
the same page.

“We have three seniors to replace next year and these other guys
better start stepping up now.”

Bradford is at Kane next Tuesday.
