Elk license drawing held

KERSEY – The fifth annual elk license drawing was held Saturday
at the Elk Expo in Kersey, with a few Elk County hunters awarded
licenses.

A total of 50 licenses were drawn for two hunts – the first will
be held Nov. 7-12, with a newly added second hunt Sept. 18-23,
2006.

The elk census was conducted in 2001 by the Pennsylvania Game
Commission and it was determined there were more than 600 wild elk
in Pennsylvania, with the most heavily populated counties being Elk
and Cameron. The Game Commission decided the regulated hunting of
elk was the way to trim the herd to a manageable number.

This year, one of the lucky winners of a license was in the
audience when his name was drawn.

Don Snyder, 12, of Brookville, told The Era, “I don’t know what
to say, I was just amazed.”

Snyder couldn’t keep the smile off his face and the spring in
his step when he went up on stage to be congratulated by the
crowd.

Officials said it was Snyder’s first year to hunt and he
received his first license.

Also garnering a winning license was Kenneth J. Mountain of St.
Marys for a bullðand Paul E. Swanson of Kersey for a cow.

In attendance at the drawing was the executive director of the
Game Commission, Vern Ross.

The expo also featured shuttle bus tours to view the elk near
Benezette, wildlife calling contests and various exhibitions and
demonstrations.
