Sherman lifts Bradford over St. Marys

Lindsay Sherman scored on an assist from Katie White to power
the Bradford Lady Owls (6-3) to a 1-0 victory over St. Marys in
high school soccer Wednesday.

“Sherman and White had 11 shots on goal between them,” noted
Bradford coach Tony Doriguzzi. “They kept attacking and because of
their relentless efforts we were able to score.”

Hope Ruffner was in goal with seven saves.

“Our fullbacks, Tricia Copeland, Whitney Cline, Dana Carrico and
Jenna Spittler, did everything right tonight,” Doriguzzi noted.
“They kept the ball out of our end most of the match and only
allowed seven shots on goal tRenee Anderson was in goal for St.
Marys with 20 saves.

“Midfielder Steph Lyons really stepped up tonight,” commented
Doriguzzi. “We have some key players out with injuries and even
Steph took a beating Monday against DuBois. She came through big
for us tonight, making a few full field sprints down the flank. It
was impressive.

“We all knew this was a must-win game for us. We had lost three
in a row, two of which were league games. The ladies were a little
unorganized in the first half but we tightened things up after the
break and started to attack better. This win is just what we
needed.”

The Lady Owls are back in action today at Portville, N.Y. (7
p.m.).

In JV action, Bradford (4-3) tied St. Marys 1-1.

Leah Costik scored on an assist from Britani VanScoter. It was
Costik’s first-ever goal, according to JV coach Joe Doriguzzi.

Nichole Shine was in goal with two saves.
