Students at School Street Elementary School are giving what they
can for those affected by Hurricane Katrina.
All the students in the school are welcome to donate to the
effort, and students from Jill Cottillion’s and Karen Roulo’s
classes are counting the money to help out those who have lost so
much in the wake of the disaster that swept through the Gulf
states.
Some students in Cottillion’s class took a few minutes Monday
afternoon to explain the project and what it meant to them.
“We’re going to use half to buy supplies for a school in
Louisiana and the other half is going to the Red Cross,” explained
Brianna Kloss. So far, the students have raised more than $500.
“We all have been bringing in money,” said Megan McCool, adding
the students want to help out other kids who need it.
“We think it’s really helpful … they don’t have any supplies or
anything,” said Carrygan Jordan.
“The kids there can’t go to school or anything,” added Ali
Rinfrette.
All four girls added they liked being able to help people who
had lost so much.
Cottillion said, “At the last meeting, the (Parent-Teacher
Organization) decided to match whatever we raise.”
Currently, the donations are at more than $1,000. Collections
will continue through Friday.
Cottillion explained that School Street will partner with a
school in Louisiana to be a beneficiary of the students’
generosity.
“We’re trying to find the school with the most needs,” she
added.
