KANE — For the second consecutive season, the Port Allegany/Smethport wrestling team is Allegheny Mountain Wrestling League champions.

In a battle of unbeatens at Kane High School on Tuesday night, the two teams split the contested matches at 6 wins a piece, but the Gators (6-0) used bonus points and a pair of forfeits to earn a 39-30 victory over the host Wolves.

Port Allegany head coach Brad Greenman highlighted the wins from Ethan Debockler and Taro Tanaka at 152 and 160 pounds, respectively, that helped carry momentum for the rest of the match. Debockler decisioned Addison Plants, 17-16, in a spirited bout, while Taro Tanaka pinned Kane’s Nate Asp in 1:45.

In the lightweights, both Bryent and Braedon Johnson continued their strong seasons with quick pins of their opponents. Bryent earned his in 1:31 at 113 pounds, and Braedon scored a pin at 126 in 1:12.

Chase Weimer also decisioned Alex Bechakas, 9-4, at 106 pounds for the Gators and Eli Petruzzi took home a 7-4 decision of Ben Westerburg at 138 pounds.

For Kane (5-1), highlights included Lane Hilliard’s decision of Montgomery Tanner, 13-7, at 145 pounds and Sean Nystrom’s pin of Owen Roboski in 38 seconds at heavyweight.

Port Allegany’s league championship is its second in as many years, and second since it began a co-operative agreement with Smethport in the sport prior to the start of last season.

“Biggest takeaway this year was how tight our matches were with Kane and Johnsonburg,” Greenman said. “That’s a testament to the league. I know some teams are really down on numbers, but it goes to show you that the quality of the league, especially in this district, is pretty high.”

Port Allegany wraps up its regular season with a match against Oswayo Valley next week.

Bradford 42, Punxsutawney 15

Derek Sunafrank, Elijah Fitton, Drake Hayden and Dylan Mazzone each won their contested bouts for the Bradford High wrestling team to propel the Owls to a 42-15 victory over Punxsutawney Thursday night in its last dual match of the year.

On a night that saw four forfeits and four double forfeits, Bradford used the heavier weight classes to secure the win.

At 182 pounds, Derek Sunafrank pinned Joshua Miller in 1:20. After Punxsy’s Garrett Eddy pinned Michael Gow in 32 seconds at 195, Andrew Krainz picked up a forfeit win for the Owls at 220 pounds before Dylan Mazzone pinned the Chucks’ Hunter Harris in 1:28 in the heavyweight bout.

Also earning victories in contested bouts for Bradford were Elijah Fitton (138 pounds) and Drake Hayden (145), pinning their opponents at 1:13 and 2:15, respectively.

Not only did the Owls close their regular season with a victory, but the result also guaranteed that the team earned a pass on a couple days of practice this weekend.

“Lucas and Drake said let’s bet on it. (I) agreed to no practice on Friday and they said no practice on Sunday either if we won and made (me) shake on it,” BAHS head coach Jamey Miller said laughingly. “They know their coach and if they didn’t get him to shake on it he would have them into practice. But they better come in Monday ready to work.”

SHINGLEHOUSE — The Rams won three of the four contested bouts on the night and then used six forfeit victories to roll past Oswayo Valley and win their second AMWL match in as many nights.

Johnsonburg (5-1) had Cole Casilio (160 pounds) win by fall over Michael Hewitt in 1:10; Collin Porter (120) decision Zane Malogrino, 5-0; and Dalton Stalhi (138) win by fall over Gage Aldrich in 2:21.

Colton Geitler decisioned Aiden Zimmerman, 8-2, at 152 pounds to pick up Oswayo Valley’s lone victory.

“There are still things to work on technically, but I’m happy with Colton’s match,” OV head coach Tyler Newton said. “Couple kids wrestled the same kids they did in the West Branch Tournament and the result was better now than it was earlier.”

CLARION — Armandt Rosario and Jake Wickett each decisioned their opponents to pick up the only two contested victories of the night for the Elkers.

Rosario decisioned Breckin Rex, 7-2, at 145 pounds while Wickett earned an 8-1 decision over Peyton Means at 152.

Clarion’s Cutter Boggess won his match at 160 pounds with a 7-0 decision. The two teams then split the remaining seven bouts with either forfeits or double forfeits.
